What is the first thing you think about when you hear the word “BOLD”? For me, I immediately think about the A1 Bold steak sauce commercials … “It gets you here, here, and right here”. But in all seriously, boldness is more than just a tangy steak sauce, its something that we have to be in this world. As it says in 1 Timothy 1:7
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
Today I missed a great opportunity. As I was talking with a few co-workers, somehow we got on the subject of God through the discussion of books. Then somehow we got to talking about “The Divinci Code”, and the conversation ended with one person implying we came from apes. So looking back, I should have confronted that notion with what I believe to be true, but sadly that didn’t happen. In order to not start a heated debate, I just changed the topic and moved on.
What I needed to do at that moment was be “BOLD”. Here is what I should have said:
I don’t believe we came from apes, nor do I believe that the universe around us just “happened” into existence over millions of years of nothingness or bubbling chemical reactions. I believe that we are created by our Creator, God. When you look at the world around you and see how everything perfectly fits into its place, mathematicians would agree, the probability of all the things lining up perfectly to create even once species of life is near impossible, much less all the life that exists on this planet. I mean, if the earth were 1 mile closer or farther from the sun it could not sustain life. Its obvious that we are a creation, not just the result of some random freak happening in the universe.
And since saying God can mean different things to different people, let me be more clear. I believe that God created the heavens, the earth and everything in it. I believe that he delivered his people, the Israelites, countless times over history, and then he sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross to pay the debt of all of our sins. I believe Jesus paid the price for us, and God raised him from the dead after 3 days. I believe our eternal salvation comes through believing in Christ alone. You may say that sounds crazy, but to me its crazier to believe we came from nothing. Its obvious when you look at our human bodies, that we were crafted, the way all the parts work together perfectly. I heard a great illustration of this …
“ If you were walking in a field and found a pocket watch, but had never seen one before, or even knew what it was, you would be able to tell that it was hand crafted / created by someone. You wouldn’t say “Wow, look how all those pieces of metal fell together and created this object that keeps time” … would you?
So I know hind sight is 20-20, but I at least hope to learn from my mistakes, and I ask God to grant me the spirit of boldness that he promised us.
